General contractors and remodelers: what an AI agent can and can't do with your software
- Last verified
- Updated Published
Who this is for: owners, project managers and office staff at general contracting and remodeling companies who want to know which parts of their software an AI agent can reach today, and which federal rules apply before it touches estimates, contracts, crew records or homeowner messages. The first agent covered is Muse, Meta's personal agent with a small-business mode. Other agents can be added to the same tables later.
Every claim below links its source and carries the date we checked it.
How to read the status labels
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Confirmed by vendor | The software company or Meta says it in its own docs, help center, blog or press release. |
| Confirmed by the [agency] | A government body says it on its own site, and the label names it (for example "Confirmed by the EPA" or "Confirmed by the IRS"). |
| Reported | A press outlet or independent site says it, and we haven't found it in the vendor's own material. |
| Conflicting | Sources disagree. We show both. |
| Unverified | We couldn't confirm it. Treat it as an open question. |
We haven't run these tasks ourselves. "The vendor says" doesn't mean "we tested it." See how we check.
The short version
- No construction management app is a built-in Muse connector. Buildertrend, JobTread, Procore and Houzz Pro are missing from Meta's Sept 29 launch list. QuickBooks, Dropbox and Box are on it. (Confirmed by vendor 1)
- Two contractor tools run their own MCP servers, the plug-in standard many AI assistants use: JobTread's AI Connector and CompanyCam's MCP Server, which is in beta. (Confirmed by vendor 5 7) Neither names Muse as a supported client, so whether either works inside Muse is an open question. (Unverified)
- JobTread warns that its connector acts as you, can change and sometimes delete records, and has no undo. (Confirmed by vendor 5) Start with reading and drafting, not sending.
- Buildertrend has no public API, according to an independent API review; its integrations come through its own marketplace. (Reported 10)
- Paid work that disturbs paint in a home built before 1978 needs an EPA-certified firm, and that includes sole proprietors and general contractors. (Confirmed by the EPA 23 24) An agent that books jobs or writes ads for older homes should know the year built.

Project management and estimating suites
| Tool you run | Built-in Muse connector? | Other route | Status and source |
|---|---|---|---|
| JobTread | No | The AI Connector is an MCP server JobTread built for outside AI tools; JobTread's guide is written around Claude. It works under the connecting user's own permissions and can read, create, edit and in some cases delete data. It runs only when asked, though you can set it up for recurring jobs such as a weekly status summary. JobTread also describes itself as API-first, with public API docs, Zapier and a QuickBooks Online integration. | Not on Meta's list: Confirmed by vendor 1 . Connector: Confirmed by vendor 5 . API: Confirmed by vendor 6 . Works inside Muse: Unverified . |
| Buildertrend | No | Integrations come through the Buildertrend Marketplace; its FAQ covers Home Depot receipts, Gusto and QuickBooks. An independent API review found no public API and no official or well-kept community MCP server. Some third parties sell unofficial layers that drive the Buildertrend web app with your login. | Marketplace: Confirmed by vendor 9 . No public API or MCP: Reported 10 . |
| CoConstruct | No | CoConstruct is moving its customers to Buildertrend. New projects can still be added in CoConstruct through March 31, 2027, but not after you commit to Buildertrend. Past project data stays available. | Confirmed by vendor 11 |
| Procore | No | Public REST API with OAuth 2.0, a developer sandbox and an App Marketplace. Procore's own AI comes with the purchase of a Digital Coworker package, and Procore says it stages every proposed change for a person to review. A competitor says Procore doesn't offer an MCP server your own AI can connect to. Search results point to a Procore developer page about an MCP setup, but it wouldn't load for us. | API: Confirmed by vendor 12 . Procore AI: Confirmed by vendor 13 . No outside MCP: Reported 14 . Procore's own MCP page: Unverified . |
| Houzz Pro | No | REST API for verified partners only. Houzz issues the service accounts; there is no self-serve signup yet. Access is split into read, write and admin or delete scopes for projects, leads, schedules, daily logs, files, subcontractors and more. We found no MCP server. | API: Confirmed by vendor 15 . MCP: Unverified . |
| Contractor Foreman | No | An official Zapier app with a customer trigger and actions that create customers and leads, powered by a private API key. No public API reference. We found no MCP server. | Reported 18 . MCP: Unverified . |
| BuildBook | No | A QuickBooks Online sync that pushes projects, vendors, bills, expenses and invoices one way, from BuildBook into QBO. It needs QBO Plus or Advanced, in the US and in US dollars. We found no public API or MCP. | QuickBooks: Confirmed by vendor 19 . API or MCP: Unverified . |
Job costing and invoicing
| Tool you run | Built-in Muse connector? | Other route | Status and source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knowify | No | A REST API with OAuth 2.0. Knowify runs an MCP server for Claude, but today it serves only reference material about the API. Tools that query, create, update or delete data aren't exposed yet. Separately, a Knowify API key for Zapier requires the Growth or Enterprise plan. | MCP and API: Confirmed by vendor 16 . Zapier key: Confirmed by vendor 17 . |
| QuickBooks | Yes | n/a | Confirmed by vendor 1 4 |
Photos, takeoff and signatures
| Tool you run | Built-in Muse connector? | Other route | Status and source |
|---|---|---|---|
| CompanyCam | No | MCP Server in beta, set up from the CompanyCam web app. Admins and Managers can connect by default, and Standard Users can if an admin allows it. Each token is either read-only or read and write. With write access it can create projects, checklists, proposals, invoices, customers and webhooks, but no token can delete anything. There is also a REST API for paid plans; only Admins and Managers can make keys, and keys expire. | MCP: Confirmed by vendor 7 . API: Confirmed by vendor 8 . Works inside Muse: Unverified . |
| STACK (takeoff and estimating) | No | REST API with OAuth. Using it needs an API-enabled subscription and a request for access, plus someone who can program. We found no MCP server. | API: Confirmed by vendor 20 . MCP: Unverified . |
| PlanSwift | No | ConstructConnect publishes developer docs for PlanSwift scripting and customization, which is desktop software. We found no cloud API or MCP. | Developer docs: Confirmed by vendor 21 . Cloud API or MCP: Unverified . |
| Docusign | No | Docusign says its MCP server became generally available to any MCP client on Sept 30, 2026, with account-level admin controls. | Not on Meta's list: Confirmed by vendor 1 . MCP: Confirmed by vendor 22 . Works inside Muse: Unverified . |
| Dropbox or Box (plan sets and files) | Yes | n/a | Confirmed by vendor 1 |
If you also run Jobber, Housecall Pro or ServiceTitan for service calls, see our HVAC and plumbing guide. Those tools are covered there.
What "custom connector" means here: For a service missing from the list, Muse can walk you through building your own connector, and Meta states that it doesn't vet these custom connectors. (Confirmed by vendor 2) If you add JobTread, CompanyCam or another contractor tool that way, what the agent can reach is up to you and that vendor's access settings.
Jobs you could hand off today (per vendor docs)
| Job | Tool | What the vendor says | Status and source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Get a weekly summary of active job statuses | JobTread AI Connector (outside Muse) | JobTread gives this as an example of a recurring task | Confirmed by vendor 5 . In Muse: Unverified |
| Tag a backlog of untagged job photos by trade | CompanyCam MCP (outside Muse) | Listed as an example prompt | Confirmed by vendor 7 . In Muse: Unverified |
| Write a weekly project recap from comments and photos | CompanyCam MCP (outside Muse) | Listed as an example prompt | Confirmed by vendor 7 . In Muse: Unverified |
| Nudge clients whose progress invoices are past due, and see where cash stands | QuickBooks in Muse | Intuit's examples include reminders on overdue invoices plus profit-and-loss and cash-flow reports | Confirmed by vendor 4 |
JobTread's own guidance sorts uses into safe ones (reading, drafting, summarizing, reports for your review) and aggressive ones (editing or deleting live records, sending proposals or invoices directly, bulk updates, sends without review). (Confirmed by vendor 5) That split is a good default for any contractor tool. Under Meta's connector guidelines, each sensitive action needs its own sign-off, and connectors that would transfer funds between accounts aren't being accepted for now. (Confirmed by vendor 3)
Keep these out
- Sending contracts, change orders and invoices without a person reading them. JobTread says changes made by its connector take effect at once and can't be restored. (Confirmed by vendor 5) Have the agent draft, and send it yourself.
- Broad API keys. CompanyCam offers keys from read-only up to full access, and Houzz Pro splits access into read, write and admin or delete scopes. (Confirmed by vendor 8 15) Give an agent the narrowest key that does the job.
- Tools that log in as you. With no public Buildertrend API, the outside layers on offer work by driving the web app. (Reported 10) That means handing a third party your Buildertrend login, which can see your clients' homes, budgets and documents.
- Payroll and taxes. Intuit leaves payroll and taxes out of what its Muse connector does. (Confirmed by vendor 4)
Risks to know before an agent touches jobs, records or homeowners
- Lead paint in older homes (EPA RRP rule). The rule covers paid work that disturbs paint in housing and child-occupied facilities built before 1978, including remodeling, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and window replacement. Firms can't advertise or do that work without firm certification. Jobs under 6 square feet of paint per room inside or 20 square feet outside are exempt, except window replacement and demolition, which are always covered. Testing isn't required, but without paperwork showing the paint isn't lead-based, the rule applies. (Confirmed by the EPA 24) Fourteen states run their own programs in place of EPA's. (Confirmed by the EPA 23) Before an agent schedules a pre-1978 job or writes an ad for that kind of work, check the certification on file.
- Injury records (OSHA). A company with more than 10 employees at any time in the past calendar year generally keeps OSHA injury and illness records (the 300 log, 300A summary and 301 report) and saves them for five years. Every covered employer, whatever its size, must report a work-related death to OSHA within 8 hours, and an in-patient hospitalization, amputation or loss of an eye within 24 hours. (Confirmed by OSHA 25 26) Injury records hold medical details. Keep them out of shared folders an agent can read, and don't count on an agent to make the call to OSHA on time.
- Sales made in the client's home (the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule). The FTC's rule covers sales of $25 or more made at the buyer's home ($130 or more at other temporary locations). The seller must give the buyer a completed contract or receipt with a notice of the right to cancel within three business days, in the same language as the sales talk, and must tell the buyer about that right out loud. A valid cancellation must be honored with a refund within 10 business days. Buyer-requested emergency repairs with a handwritten waiver, and repair visits the buyer asked for, are among the exceptions. (Confirmed by the FTC 27) If an agent sends a contract for e-signature after an in-home estimate, check that the cancellation notice goes with it.
- Subcontractor tax forms (IRS). The IRS says to get a Form W-9 from an independent contractor, keep it for four years, and report payments at or above the threshold on Form 1099-NEC. Filers with 10 or more information returns in a year must e-file. (Confirmed by the IRS 28) If a payee doesn't give a correct taxpayer ID number, the payer may have to withhold 24% of payments (backup withholding). (Confirmed by the IRS 29) A W-9 can hold a Social Security number. Don't paste one into an agent chat, and limit which connectors can open the folder where they're kept.
- Texting homeowners and leads (FCC). Under FCC rules, a text sent to a cell phone with an autodialer is banned unless the owner agreed to it first. Marketing texts call for written consent, while oral consent can be enough for informational ones, and anyone can withdraw consent at any time by any reasonable means. (Confirmed by the FCC 30) Keep a record of consent before an agent texts estimates, promotions or schedule updates.
- Contractor licensing and lien waivers. Licensing for home improvement work and the rules for lien waivers and payment notices are set mostly by states, and we didn't find a single federal source to cite. (Unverified) Check with your state's licensing board before an agent quotes your license or sends lien paperwork.

FAQ
Does Muse work with Buildertrend or JobTread? Neither is a built-in Muse connector as of Oct 27, 2026. (Confirmed by vendor 1) JobTread has its own MCP connector for outside AI tools. (Confirmed by vendor 5) Buildertrend has no public API, according to an independent review. (Reported 10) We found no public account of either being hooked up to Muse.
Can an agent send proposals for me? CompanyCam's MCP can draft a proposal from your price book. (Confirmed by vendor 7) Read it before it goes out. For sales made in the homeowner's home, the cancellation notice rules above still apply.
I'm still on CoConstruct. What should I expect? You can add new projects in CoConstruct through March 31, 2027, unless you've already committed to Buildertrend, and your past data stays available. (Confirmed by vendor 11)
Can it pay my subs? Meta's connector guidelines say it isn't accepting new connectors that transfer money between financial accounts for now. (Confirmed by vendor 3) Collect W-9s before the first payment either way.
